I’m totally hooked on Skittles and other sweets.

This expert says they’re bad for your metabolism and blood sugar levels, and he’s got a point. We don’t eat sweets for their health benefits, we eat them because they’re sweet.

It’s hard to give them up when you’re addicted. The doctor said that sweets are empty calories that can also affect energy levels.

A doctor has warned against eating certain foods.

The anti-aging page @antiagingmission recently shared a podcast episode in which Dr. Casey Means (@drcaseyskitchen) talks about foods that can affect glucose levels. (Via)

“In our large database of 51 million glucose results, the worst food is Skittles,” Dr. Means said.

The doctor explained that Skittles have an average peak glucose of 83 mg per deciliter’.

“It’s pretty much guaranteed that you’ll crash after eating something like that,” he said, and it’s not just Skittles. Other sweets are just as bad, like Sour Patch Kids, candy corn and basically anything that’s “essentially frozen sugar”.

And what might be surprising? Cereal! A lot of them cause a pretty sharp rise in blood sugar, from sugary kids’ cereals like Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Lucky Charms to those advertised as heart-healthy, like Honey Nut Cheerios.

According to the doctor, these foods can raise blood sugar levels by 60 mg/dl or more.

“All typical American breakfast foods are among the 100 worst,” the doctor said, referring to foods like muffins, waffles and pancakes.

So, what’s the best thing to eat?

Well, on the one hand, there are foods that give a small burst of energy, and on the other, there are foods that give a slower but longer-lasting boost.

And here’s the thing: there are actually many delicious foods that aren’t on this list, so don’t worry! You can eat omelettes, avocado, eggs, chia pudding, Greek yoghurt and berries. And here’s another thing: According to Dr. Means, it’s simple: ‘Don’t eat those first things.

Popsicles can quickly spike blood sugar levels.

‘They’re faster than a candy bar because they contain no protein and only a little fat, so the sugar gets into your bloodstream quickly,’ explains Everyday Health. (Via)

So, what’s the issue with blood glucose?

Glucose in the blood is the body’s main energy source, coming from the carbs in food and drink.

WebMD says the body is designed to keep a steady level of glucose in the blood. (Via)

Blood sugar levels should naturally rise after a meal and fall a few hours later, when the body transfers glucose to the cells.

If you don’t have diabetes, a normal blood glucose level is between 70 and 99 mg/dL, but a level between 50 and 70 mg/dL may also be normal, according to the Cleveland Clinic. (Via)

But if it’s between 100 and 125 mg/dL, you might have prediabetes, which doubles your chances of getting type 2 diabetes in the next 5 to 10 years. But don’t worry, there are always ways to fix prediabetes. Your doctor will probably tell you to steer clear of Skittles and sugary cereals.

People commenting on the video on Insta weren’t surprised to hear that Skittles and other sweets are bad for you.

“Thank goodness I’m not Nerd Clusters,” said the most-read comment. “But I love sour Skittles, it’s an addiction I can’t stop,” joked another.

“It’s all the food they hand out in schools and nursing homes,” commented someone else. One commenter joked that they get a headache just 0.2 seconds after eating Skittles.
