The Ohio State Buckeyes men’s football team visited the White House to celebrate its 2024 national championship, where it won the first-ever NCAA 12-team playoff.

And they left the White House minus one intact trophy.

At the ceremony, Vice President JD Vance, himself an Ohio State University alumni, helped try to hoist the national championship trophy alongside a player.

Instead, it broke off, leaving Vance fumbling for the base and dropping it to the ground.

Vance’s stumble came as the presentation was ending.

In his remarks before the miscue, Vance said he wanted to congratulate a “hell of a 2024 season,” who helped make “an incredible year even better for this very proud Ohio State alum.”

Vance then went to lift the trophy alongside a player, the top fell off, leaving Vance holding the base, before dropping that as well.

Together, they helped put the trophy back together, resting it on the table.

Online, the gaffe instantly exploded.

“A perfect metaphor for the Trump administration,” said one.

“No notes,” wrote another.

The moment also came as the White House Marine Corps band played a rendition of Queen’s “We Are the Champions,” a moment not lost on some.

“‘No time for losers,’ goes the song playing while JD Vance touches a winners’ trophy and it immediately crumbles,” wrote a poster on Bluesky.

Vance tried to save face by tweeting about the gaffe, saying “I didn’t want anyone after Ohio State to get the trophy so I decided to break it.”

But whatever excuse Vance would give wouldn’t stop the haters.

“These clowns can’t do anything right,” concluded a Bluesky user.
