I got a direct hit…
Burger King employee Colton Kerbs (@coltonkerbs8) posted a video on TikTok showing off the unique sauce he serves. His video, which has been watched more than 2.4 million times on the app, has left users speechless, but has also sparked complaints about the extra sauce.
The video shows Kerbs parked in the BK drive-through window. Customers in the car film him during the eight-second clip, which shows a stack of three sauces sitting on the windowsill.
“Dairy Queen charges 50 cents for each package of sauce,” one person in the car tells Kerbs.
This revelation startles the clerk, who tilts his chin down for what seems like an inordinate amount of time.A person in the back of the car laughs and asks, “Sauce, please.” The Burger King employee responds, picks up one of the sauce containers and throws it at the person recording the video.
The throw was direct and landed perfectly on target with a thud.
Commentators had a good laugh.
Several people reacting to the video found the exchange hilarious. “He sent me DIRECT,” wrote one.
Another commented, “This is how I intend to live my life.”
Others also shared their own fast-food sauce orders in the comments. My husband once ordered an “absurd amount of hot sauce” from Taco Bell. And his daughter filled a paper bag with hot sauce packets. That was four years ago and we still have some in the bag.
Others were just amazed at how precise the Burger King employee was when tossing the sauce. One person even said, “Because I gasped!”
But another onlooker said that DQ charged even more for the sauce. “In my Dairy Queen it cost a dollar. They even added a heartbroken emoji to show how upset they were about the extra fee.”
One viewer also thought about the nature of the video interaction. “The picture, I can’t. It’s me chatting to my mates when they’re away and I’m working.
“Another TikTok user complained that he paid for extra sauce, but it wasn’t included in his order.
Charging for sauces
Charging for sauces in fast-food restaurants isn’t a universal practice. In fact, it varies from franchise to franchise. Take McDonald’s, the world’s largest fast-food franchise, for example. It seems to vary from franchise to franchise. (Via) (Via)
This is evidenced by this viral post on r/AskReddit, in which an app user asks when Mickey D’s started “charging for sauce.” While loads of people in the comments section were angry about it, some said it’s not the norm. “McDonald’s doesn’t charge for sauce. It’s up to each franchisee to decide. It’s not company policy,” one person wrote. (Via)
Other Reddit users had different opinions. One said, “Wait, what?” and claimed he’s never been charged for sauce. Another app user said “always in Europe,” which suggests that this might be a regional thing. (Via)
As Kerbs’s video pointed out, some Dairy Queen customers weren’t happy about having to pay for gravy, like this TripAdvisor user who uploaded a review of a restaurant in Wichita, Kansas. He gave the restaurant a one-star rating and said several things he wasn’t happy about.
So, why is this tax being introduced?
According to an article in the NY Post by Josiah Lapis, a former chef at Mickey D’s, the idea is to stop people abusing the free gravy system and filling their bags with it. (Via)
The article mentions a Quora forum post where the former employee talks about the “sauce invasion”. “The main reason we charge for extra bags is to prevent abuse. It’s safe to assume that two sauce pouches are enough for a six-pack of nuggets, right? If you need more, what do you do with the nuggets? (Via)
Lapis also said that employees can give out free packets whenever they want. You get a free sauce packet with a package of four or six nuggets. The more nuggets you have, the more sauce packets you get.
He explains that this saves money for the restaurant because for every 20 packets of sauce they don’t sell, they have to order one less. After a while, they just give the free sauces to customers.
In another Quora discussion on the same topic, someone else said that they’ve worked in lots of restaurants and if they give people free sauces, they’ll order loads of them. Sauces aren’t free, they’re usually very expensive, so diners should stick to a reasonable amount, but they don’t have to be included. (Via)
