Billionaire Jeff Bezos unexpectedly faceplanted while greeting his fianceé as she returned to Earth in his Blue Origin capsule.
Lauren Sanchez was part of an all-female crew aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket that took off Monday.
The crew, who also included singer Katy Perry and CBS Mornings co-host Gayle King, flew above Texas on an almost 11-minute space tourism flight. The women came back to Earth in a soft parachute landing.
But when Bezos, 61, greeted them, he fell right on his face.
The former Amazon CEO was seen in a livestream walking around the capsule. He placed his hand on the white, dome-shaped machine and continued running around it.
There appeared to be a dip in the desert ground, however, that seemed to have led to Bezos’ misstep.
He quickly got back up, but not before detractors took notice.
“He fell like a newborn deer,” @Grokstar_1 posted to X.
He didn’t seem too shaken up.
“Bezos was fine and recovered quickly from pulling a Joe Biden,” joked a right-wing influencer.
Bezos and Sanchez embraced and kissed after she exited the landing pod.
Some found the moment extremely relatable. “First time it’s felt like he’s a normal person,” said one person.
“Rocket man, meet gravity,” said another commenter.
Bezos is the founder of space technology company Blue Origin.
In 2015, the company launched its first uncrewed model, and just six years later, the first crewed mission—with Bezos on it—crossed the Karman line, which is the conventional understanding of the beginning of outer space.
The celebrities and crewmates of today’s flight—Amanda Nguyen, Aisha Bowe, and Kerianne Flynn—flew to a similar height, just over 60 miles above the Earth.
The group is the first all-female crew since a Soviet space mission in 1963.
Perry sang “What a Wonderful World” while in space. King said the trip was “a reminder that we need to do better, be better.”
“I can’t put it into words,” Sanchez said on the livestream. “We got to see the Moon! The Earth looked so quiet.”
